TIN vs TRN: find your 10-digit TIN and your Peppol ID
Your TRN is your 15-digit VAT number. Your TIN is a 10-digit number that builds your eInvoicing address. Here is how to find and confirm both.
In short
Two tax numbers matter for eInvoicing. The Tax Registration Number (TRN) is your VAT number. The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is the number behind your eInvoicing address. Confirm your own TIN in EmaraTax, and ask your customers to confirm theirs. Never work one out from the other.
Why eInvoicing needs it
Every eInvoice travels over the UAE network to an address called a Peppol ID. The Ministry of Finance Guidelines define it as the scheme code 0235 followed by the 10-digit TIN. So your TIN decides where your customers send your bills, and your customer's TIN decides where your invoices go.
The TRN still matters too. A tax invoice must show the TRN of a registered seller and buyer, as it does today.
| TRN | TIN | Peppol ID | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your VAT registration number | Your tax identity with the Federal Tax Authority | Your address on the eInvoicing network |
| Length | 15 digits | 10 digits | 0235: plus 10 digits |
| Example | 101010100200003 | 1010101002 | 0235:1010101002 |
| Where it appears | Printed on tax invoices | Inside the Peppol ID; on a commercial invoice from a seller with no TRN | In every eInvoice, as the buyer or seller address |
The Guidelines say the TIN is the first 10 digits of your own TRN. In practice, this is where errors start:
- VAT groups. The group has one TRN, and it is printed on every member's invoices. Each member has its own TIN and its own Peppol ID. The first 10 digits of the group TRN give the group representative's TIN, not yours.
- Records that do not match. Calculus staff have seen businesses whose TIN in the UAE Peppol directory differs from the first 10 digits of the TRN they print.
So take the TIN from a source that states it, every time.
What good looks like
An invented VAT group, Gulf Spice Group, with two members:
| Member | TRN on invoices | TIN (confirmed) | Peppol ID |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulf Spice Imports FZE (representative) | 101010100200003 (group) | 1010101002 | 0235:1010101002 |
| Gulf Spice Packing LLC | 101010100200003 (group) | Its own 10 digits, from its own EmaraTax account | 0235 + that TIN |
Both members print the same TRN. Each has a different TIN and a different Peppol ID.
How to find your own TIN
Sources that state the TIN, best first:
- Your EmaraTax account. Log in with your company credentials or UAE PASS. Your 10-digit TIN is shown in your EmaraTax profile. The eInvoicing section, where you appoint your eInvoicing service provider, is in the same account. In a VAT group, each member checks its own account.
- Your service provider's confirmation email. After you link your account to your Accredited Service Provider (ASP), its email states the Peppol ID it activated.
- The UAE Peppol directory. Once your Peppol ID is active, it can be searched there.
- Your Corporate Tax registration certificate. Use it only as a fallback.
Not registered for VAT? A business in scope of eInvoicing must still have a TIN. If you have no registration with the Federal Tax Authority, you generate a TIN through EmaraTax.
How to fix it in Tally
- For each customer, open Alt+G (Go To) > Alter > Ledger. Under VAT registration details, Tally fills the TIN from the first 10 digits of the TRN.
- Overwrite the TIN with the value the customer confirmed, wherever it differs. For VAT group members it will differ.
- Set Party registered on PEPPOL to Yes and enter the Peppol ID: 0235:, then the confirmed TIN.
- Save with Ctrl+A.
- Check your own company's TIN with Calculus staff, so it matches your EmaraTax account before your first eInvoice.
If your Tally release does not show TIN or PEPPOL ID fields, keep the confirmed TIN in the ledger notes and send it to Calculus staff.
How to fix it in Excel or another system
Hold three separate columns for each party, all formatted as Text:
- TRN: 15 digits, for example 101010100200003
- TIN: 10 digits, for example 1010101002
- Peppol ID: 0235: plus the TIN, for example 0235:1010101002
Add a fourth column, TIN source, so anyone can see where the number came from. Do not add a formula that builds the TIN from the TRN.
If you use an ERP, ask your ERP partner to add separate TIN and Peppol ID fields to the company and customer records, filled by hand, not by formula.
Checklist
- Your own TIN confirmed from EmaraTax (each VAT group member separately)
- Your Peppol ID written down: 0235 + your TIN
- Each customer's TIN confirmed from a source that states it
- No formula or default that copies the TIN from the TRN
- TIN and Peppol ID columns formatted as text
The law
- MoF UAE Electronic Invoicing Guidelines V1.1, section 2 (your TIN is your Participant Identifier; Tax Group members use their own TIN, not the representative's; persons not registered must register to obtain a TIN), section 3 (Peppol participant identifier is 0235 followed by the 10-digit TIN), Appendix 1 section 13.2 (each Tax Group member onboards separately; persons not registered generate a TIN through EmaraTax). mof.gov.ae
- Ministerial Decision No. 243 of 2025 on the Electronic Invoicing System, Article 5(1): issuers and recipients appoint an Accredited Service Provider. mof.gov.ae
- VAT Executive Regulation, Article 59: a tax invoice shows the TRN of the supplier and of a registered recipient.
- Peppol PINT AE: IBT-049 Buyer electronic address, scheme 0235; IBT-048 Buyer VAT identifier. docs.peppol.eu
Common questions
- What is the difference between a TIN and a TRN?
- The Tax Registration Number (TRN) is your 15-digit VAT number. The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a 10-digit number the Federal Tax Authority gives each business. Your eInvoicing address, the Peppol ID, is 0235 followed by your TIN.
- We are in a VAT group. Do all members share one TIN?
- No. The group shares one TRN for VAT, but each member has its own TIN and its own Peppol ID. Confirm each member's TIN separately.
- Can I just take the first 10 digits of the TRN?
- No. That pattern is common, but it fails for VAT group members and does not always hold for other businesses. Confirm the TIN from a source that states it.
- We are not registered for VAT. Do we have a TIN?
- A business in scope of eInvoicing needs a TIN even without a VAT registration. If you do not have one, you generate it through EmaraTax.
